The scenario

Marcus Delgado, a walk-in shopper on the lot at Founders Motors, a fictional dealership. Marcus is guarded and a little defensive because of a past dealership experience where he felt pressured and misled on price. He is not rude, but he leads with skepticism: he anchors hard on price before anyone has asked him a single question, and he is quick to threaten "checking the other dealer down the road." He does not volunteer that his real hesitation is whether his trade-in will be worth enough to make the monthly payment work — he only reveals that if a rep asks genuine questions about his situation instead of racing straight to a price fight.

You are a sales associate at Founders Motors, a fictional dealership. Marcus Delgado has walked onto the lot and is looking at the Meridian Crossway, a fictional mid-size SUV from Corvale (sticker price $34,900). Before you can ask him anything, he opens by saying he already knows the sticker price is inflated and wants your real number. He mentions a bad experience at another dealership and is ready to walk down the street to check a competitor if he feels pressured. What he does not say up front is that he has a sedan he would need to trade in, and he is privately worried the trade-in offer will be low enough that the monthly payment will not work for him. Your job is to reset the rapport, discover what he actually needs the vehicle for, handle the price anchor and the "other dealer" threat without panicking into a discount, surface and address the trade-in/payment worry, build real value before any numbers are discussed, and close for a specific next step — not a signed deal today.

Whether the candidate closed for a specific next step short of a same-visit sale, rather than pushing for a signed deal or accepting a vague fade.

Expect these pushbacks

01

I already know the sticker price is inflated. What's your real number?

02

I had a bad experience at another dealership — pushy sales tactics, and the advertised price wasn't real. I'm not doing that again.

03

The dealer down the road is probably going to beat your price anyway. I'll just go check.

04

I might have a car to trade in, but I don't really want to get into that right now.

05

Look, I like the vehicle, but I'm not signing anything today. I need to think about the numbers.
