Can apply statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluids, and materials to a specific problem out loud — with stated assumptions, correct units, and an order-of-magnitude sanity check — not just recall definitions.

Reads blueprints, schematics, and computer-generated reports accurately; uses GD&T and datum schemes that reflect function and inspection; produces or directs drawing packages and BOMs that manufacturing can build from.

Follows a disciplined sequence from evidence preservation through candidate failure modes to a proven root cause, distinguishes root cause from symptom, and ties the remedial design change to the mechanism.

Chooses appropriately between hand calculation, simulation, and physical test; justifies boundary conditions and safety factors; reconciles model output against measured data rather than defending the model.

Identifies governing codes, performance specifications, and environmental regulations early; verifies conformance with documented evidence; refuses to trade safety or code compliance for schedule.

Confers effectively with other engineers, technicians, drafters, contractors, and customers; explains technical constraints in the listener's terms; documents decisions, dispositions, and revisions in writing.

Evaluates design proposals for cost, producibility, lead time, and maintenance burden; consolidates parts and consults suppliers; recommends alternatives instead of a bare yes or no.
