Can compute and defend load and grade requirements, flow rates, and material stress factors; explains assumptions, applies the right code criteria, and runs independent checks rather than trusting software output.

Knows which codes, permits, and environmental and safety regulations govern the work, builds compliance into the design schedule, and can evaluate whether built work conforms to specification.

Demonstrates real inspection experience — identifying nonconforming work, handling RFIs and submittals, directing surveying and layout, and making conservative, documented field decisions under schedule pressure.

Analyzes survey reports, topographic and geologic data, boring logs, blueprints, and aerial imagery critically; catches datum errors, coverage gaps, and mismatches between records and field conditions.

Builds credible quantity takeoffs and estimates appropriate to the design stage, applies contingency reasonably, and can lead a value engineering discussion without compromising safety or code compliance.

Explains constraints and options clearly to owners, contractors, agency reviewers, and the public; produces defensible written reports and holds up under questioning at meetings.

Works to CAD standards, keeps models and sheets consistent through revisions, and coordinates cleanly with other disciplines and subconsultants.
